In the latest development, Federal Minister for Information, Murtaza Solangi, has underlined the government’s unwavering commitment to assisting the Election Commission in ensuring a smooth electoral process. Solangi asserted that the caretaker government is firmly standing behind the Election Commission, with the primary goal of conducting impartial, unbiased, and transparent elections throughout Pakistan.
Addressing the media, Solangi emphasized that the caretaker government holds both constitutional and legal responsibilities to facilitate the Election Commission in organizing fair elections. He acknowledged the genuine concerns related to security and assured that the government is fully cognizant of these issues and is actively working to enhance security measures. Solangi highlighted that the Election Commission’s financial, administrative, and security needs are binding by law, ensuring a comprehensive and well-prepared approach for the upcoming elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.
Solangi also emphasized that there are no restrictions on raising questions or concerns within the electoral process. Acknowledging the importance of addressing security challenges, he expressed confidence that the government would take the necessary steps to improve the situation. He further affirmed that the Election Commission would be adequately supported to meet its legal and constitutional obligations.
The minister’s visit to the Election Commission office followed a critical meeting with election officials. Subsequently, the Election Commission made the significant decision to challenge the Peshawar High Court‘s ruling on the restoration of PTI’s symbol “Bat” in the Supreme Court. The commission is now in the process of preparing a detailed petition for submission.
During the meeting, all four members of the Election Commission, along with the special secretary, received a detailed briefing on the legal aspects pertaining to the Peshawar High Court’s decision. This proactive approach highlights the Election Commission’s commitment to seeking legal remedies in the Supreme Court concerning the recent developments.
