Pakistan’s team director, Mohammad Hafeez, attributes his team’s 79-run loss to Australia in the second Test at the MCG to what he calls ‘inconsistent umpiring’ and the ‘curse of technology.’ Hafeez expressed dissatisfaction with the concept of umpire’s call, a system designed to support the on-field umpire’s decision unless it’s a clear mistake. Notably, high-profile cricketers like Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar have also criticized this system.

Hafeez believes that the umpire’s call creates doubt and significantly impacts the game, favoring one team while harming the other. He emphasizes the need for a change, stating that if the ball hits the stumps, it should always be considered out. Reflecting on the recent match, Hafeez acknowledges that Pakistan made some mistakes as a team, but he insists that inconsistent umpiring and technological challenges influenced the outcome.

Despite Pakistan being on the receiving end of umpire’s calls during the Test, Hafeez highlights a critical decision involving Mitchell Marsh. The Australian batsman, who eventually contributed significantly to the total, was given ‘not out’ based on an umpire’s call regarding an Hasan Ali delivery. Hafeez stresses the importance of addressing these issues, expressing frustration that at times, it feels like a technology showcase rather than a cricket match.

Hafeez contends that Pakistan played better cricket and should have won the Test, despite some team errors in bowling and fielding. He credits the team’s preparation, courage, and intent but acknowledges crucial moments where they fell short. Hafeez congratulates Australia on their series win and expresses pride in the courage, intent, and passion displayed by the Pakistan team.
